Thanks for all the views, comments and likes. Thanks also to the Bedford PD in Texas for this interview and initially posting this video. I would like address some of the questions and comments that keep coming up for those of you who care to learn more by reading the description...
Why does it cost so much?
$430 is very cheap for a professional tool used by law enforcement. This is not made for consumers. Skim Scan is made for professional security and fraud task forces that must check dozens or even hundreds of gas pumps, ATMs, kiosks, etc. daily for skimmers. One unit can do that so $430 is extremely inexpensive when you compare the time it takes to check using our tool compared with getting permission/warrants, opening up machines, performing visual inspections, etc. This can take a lot of time and time is money.
Why is the officer checking outside? Aren't most skimmers inside the convenience stores?
Skimmers are everywhere. The Skim Scan that he is using can only check for deep insert skimmers by dipping it into the slot just like you would with your debit card. Inside stores, most skimmers are overlay which utilize a swiping motion that Skim Scan does not support. However we just released Skim Swipe which will address the problem of skimmers inside convenience stores, retail and travel centers.
Is this a scam?
No. We've built, tested and sold many hundreds of units already with many repeat customers. Nobody is going to come back and buy the same product unless it worked for them. We are a 52 year old wireless security company and we make all of our products in the USA. if we outsourced to China, I'm sure we could sell this device for much less. But then how would we employ our engineers, techs and staff?
Does this publicly posted video give skimmers criminals some kind of reverse engineering advantage?
No. Anyone who understands the basics of skimmers knows exactly what our skimmer detector does too. And we learn just as much from seized skimmers as criminals can learn from our skimmer detectors so like all security battles, it's a game of cat and mouse.
Why did the police purchase our product on Amazon?
Mostly out of convenience. We sell direct to many DoD, state and local law enforcement agencies but we also list some of our lower cost products on Amazon too. Many people use Amazon because they offer free shipping, have an easy return policy and they already have an Amazon account. We encourage customers to buy direct from our webstore but are fine with purchases through Amazon as well.
Please be considerate and respectful before commenting, especially when you are disparaging the police and small businesses as an armchair expert. The more ignorance that is spread only benefits the criminals and that only hurts all honest citizens. Thank you.

"You basically just turn it on, you approach the gas pump, you insert the card in. If it flashes a green light when it goes in, then it indicates that this device is fine and it only has one card reader inside of it," Bedford Police Deputy Chief Bobby LaPenna explained.
However, if the light on the Skim Scan turns red, he said that indicates there may be a second reader -- a skimmer -- inside the pump.
"The best bet with this device is to catch [the fraudulent skimmer] before it catches too many people and gets their information," LaPenna said.
He said the department has not yet found a skimmer on the card readers it has checked, but other agencies have had success with the device.
"There's no other way to detect deep-insert skimmers," said Captain Jeff Roberts with the Texas Financial Crimes Intelligence Center.
He said he found a skimmer on an operation with Irving police last year using a similar device -- and the number of skimmers his agency has found is on the rise in the past fiscal year.
"The reality is it's nothing new," Roberts said. "But it's really one of those crimes that affects everybody."
LaPenna said the device is a "great tool to have," but the best tool for people trying to avoid some of the easier-to-detect skimmers is common sense.
He said using gas pumps closer to the center of the station -- where clerks can more easily keep an eye on them -- and checking the keypad and credit card slot to make sure they're not overlaid with skimmers pasted on top of the real mechanisms can help too.
"Don’t be afraid to touch these things and verify that device is what it is," LaPenna said.
